Last week, I had an opportunity to attend the film premier of the movie ‘Loving’, which is a British-American historical drama told from the 1950’s of an interracial couple reenacting the plaintiffs in the 1967 U.S Supreme Court decision of Loving v. Virgina. The movie stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as Richard and Mildred and shows the hardships and challenges of racism, marriage and raising a family.

In this film, you see two individuals who love and care for one another deeply, however, in the state of Virginia, this ‘act’ was unacceptable because of the color of their skin. The left them with a decision to flee the state of Virginia for 20 years or go to prison. With all strength and hope, Richard and Mildred fought for the rights to get what the deserved. Justice, and to spend the rest of their lives together free, and at peace. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga at the premier of 'Loving'.

This was a great film that showcased the history of interracial couples and what led them to freedom of todays day and age. It is a highly recommended film to give individuals a better understanding of the struggles they went through to live a happy life.

Loving was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and is set to be released in the US on November 4, 2016 by Focus Features.
